On the Street: Gold Coast, Australia

Let's be honest, Gold Coast and fashionable aren't usually two words paired together in the same sentence. However, in the midst of thongs, short shorts and wifebeaters there were some urbanites that stood out from the crowd.

'Business Casual' for Gen Y
There's no room for compromise if you want to ascend a few steps on the social ladder. This 20 year-old is one of the few that understands the concept of 'power dressing' with an outfit that is fun  - yet classy.

Many might argue that power dressing always includes a black suit and a tie, but men have recently started to embrace more colours.

Why shouldn't a man express himself, even if it's at the office? The key here is keeping it sharp and clean, but with a twist of individuality.

'Smart Casual'
Smart Casual is probably one of the most contradictory and ambiguous styles. However, when and if you pull it off you are able to meet anyone anywhere without worrying about being too dressed or (God forbid) too informally dressed.

While Stian was going to meet up with his mates at the local bar, his outfit would be appropriate for dates, work or even just hanging out around the house.

The key here is to mix casual clothing (e.g. sweaters, jeans) with more formal clothes (e.g. collar shirts).

TOMS Shoes - One for One
In 2006, the American traveler Blake Mycoskie started a company founded not on profit, but social responsibility.

After a visit to Argentina Mycoskie found that many children in developing countries had no shoes to protect their feet.

He decided to do something about it and came up with the concept 'One for One'. For every shoe he sold he would give away a pair of shoes.  To date he has given over a million shoes to children in need.

'Smart Casual' in the Heat
As summer is rapidly approaching layering is becoming more and more difficult, especially if you want to avoid embarrassing sweat stains.

However, you don't have to put on your flip-flops and singlets just yet.

The key to looking good in great weather is to follow the same rules  for dressing well, but with lighter fabrics and colours.

Avoid mixed fabrics like cotton and polyester blends, as they don't breathe as well. Linen is a great alternative for those hot summer days.

Another easy way to improve your outfit during summer is to accessorize. A messenger bag can easily improve your overall look.

Is white the new black?
Designers like Versace, Lacoste and Gucci have replaced the classic black and grey monochromes out with lighter colours.

These fashion houses have often dictated the trends for the coming season, but many of the smaller fashion labels have decided to do the opposite and stick with classic dark. So don't be scared, go dark.
